Not Just Google...(or other search engines)
Until quite recently most focus, when you came talk about driving traffic to your web site, was on search engines and especially on Google. Nothing lasts forever and while Google is still the most important search engine - with some considerable margin - there are now some additional ways - which can be very successful - that you can use to drive traffic to your site. With an increased competition on the web, which makes it harder for web site owners to get to that desired first page of Google search result, it has become necessary to look for additional ways to market your web site.
(mini)Blogging
Blogging has been around for several years and is an excellent way to keep your web site content updated and fresh (and thereby loved by search engines). Lately, a newcomber to this arena has made the headlines. Twitter is a mini-blogging site that allows you to spread your word around the world in an instant by having other Twitter usesr subscribing to your updates. It is called a mini blog since it only allows 140 characthers per post. Users can updated their blog via the web or mobile devices like your normal mobile phone, iPhones, iTouch or similar.
Can Twitter benefit my business?
Used in the right way (aligned with your company's marketing plan) you business can benefit
from your using twitter. It can be used to highlight news about your company, services and products and create a following that later perhaps will sign up for your web site newsletter or, ever better, buying your product. Twitter can be used to build a relationship with your customers that later can be converted into customer loyalty. E.g. M&M, the sweet manufacturer, is using their twitter profile to post information about their products, competitions that are taking place on
their web site and company news. Have a look at their profile here http://twitter.com/msgreen.
Social Networking Media
This has also been around for some years now but is now becoming an increasingly important tool for businesses to use to break through the wall of noise on the web. Facebook & YouTube & LinkedIn are some of the most prominent ones but there are others thar perhaps suits your business better. While you will use Facebook and LinkedIn to build personal relationship that might lead to business opportunities in the future, YouTube offers a more direct way of promoting your business. If its done well you will see some immediate results. We'll use two examples to illustrate how they can be used successfully. UK based Wiggly Wigglers has created a YouTube channel (profile) to broad cast information (5 minute videos) about how you use their products. They are basic but neat and aimed at a very specific audience. Have a look at their video channel here. The YouTube channel will drive relevant traffic the Wiggly Wigglers web site that can be converted into followers and perhaps convert into increased sales. Another good example is US based BlendTec who has used a video style with a wide appeal (their videos are very funny regardless of your interest in their products) and are aimed at creating brand awareness on a large scale. These videos are fairly low budget but has achieved cult status and the video channel has many followers. Have a look at their video channel here. See one of their videos to the right.
This type of of video can also be referred to as Viral Marketing. I video piece that is sent around the world - often with a wide appeal and meant to build brand awareness.
